This is an original document, dated October 30,1876, a fully signed roster for clothing to non commissioned officers the 3rd Cavalry, each signature witnessed by Charles M. Rockefeller, and signed by each noncommissioned trooper. Scarce and unique featuring medal of honor recipient Rockefeller signing 42 times, medal of honor recipient Sergeant Michael A. McGann, medal of honor recipient Jeremiah Murphy,. ....signed by Lt. Alexander Smead on bottom.. Document is 18x20, folds, overall very good condition. The only Rockefeller document I have ever had or seen.Sergeant Michael A. McGann, Company F, was awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Rosebud Creek. McGann rushed into a group of enemy braves to rescue the Company bugler who had been shot through both arms, was surrounded, and was about to be finished off by the foe.Charles Mortimer Rockefeller (1844–1899) was an officer in the United States Army, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for service at the final major battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Fort Blakeley, in Alabama (April 9, 1865) Rockefeller was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 9th Infantry on September 3, 1867. He was promoted to first lieutenant on March 11, 1878 and to captain on August 15, 1889.At the outbreak of the War in 1898, Rockefeller, was assigned to mustering duty at Columbus Barracks in Ohio.. On July 30 he was sent to Puerto Rico where he served on the staff of Major General Frederick D. Grant until November 1898 when he returned to the United States. He sailed from San Francisco with the 9th Infantry en route to the Philippines on March 28, 1899 Rockefeller arrived in the Philippines on April 26, 1899 – two days before he was captured by Filipino insurgents near Caloocan on April 28 while inspecting outposts of his battalion. Papers belonging to Rockefeller was found two and a half miles from his last known location. It was believed he lost his way prior to his capture. After his capture, Rockefeller was promoted to major in the 6th Infantry with a date of rank of March 16, 1899. Rockefeller was never located and was presumed to have been killed by the insurgents. A Spanish officer, who was rescued from being a captive of the insurgents, reported seeing Rockefeller alive on December 12, 1899. Rockefeller was dropped from the rolls of the Army on May 12, 1900. His body was never recovered and no tangible evidence of his ultimate fate was ever found. Jeremiah Murphy Three months after the Powder River battle, on June 17, 1876, Jeremiah Murphy fought in the Battle of the Rosebud, Montana Territory. On October 16, 1877, Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor at Camp Sheridan, Nebraska, for his actions at Powder River.Saddler Jeremiah Murphy reported that the Indians shot Private Ayers through the hand and the leg before he died. The wounded man’s thigh bone was broken, so he was unable to walk. Murphy and the blacksmith, Albert Glavinski, stayed with Ayers until the Indians came close, and Murphy had decided to flee. But the wounded man pleaded to his friend in a heart-rending voice, “Oh Murphy; for Mercy’s sake, do not leave me in their hands.” Murphy bravely returned and “lifted the groaning man to his shoulders and tried to make his way through the advancing savages, who poured a rain of bullets at him.” Ayers was shot yet again, and “Murphy’s carbine stock [was] smashed by a rifle-ball.” Murphy drew his revolver, and he fired until it was empty. He then had no choice but abandon his friend and run for his life. “His uniform was pierced by several bullets, but the brave man escaped unscathed.” Murphy fled into some bushes for cover. When he noticed that the warriors had stopped firing at him, he looked back, and he “saw them [the warriors] circling around the wounded man—ten or fifteen of them.” The Indians killed Ayers, and Murphy saw him scalped. For his courage, Murphy was later awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest commendation given to United States military personnel for bravery in combat.Four soldiers were killed in battle that day including Private Peter Dowdy, who “was shot through the head and instantly killed.” Six men were also wounded. The troopers retrieved two of the bodies of the fallen, George Schneider and Peter Dowdy. Reynolds reported that there was no means of taking the bodies with the army or burying them. This was a weak excuse because the soldiers certainly could have tied the corpses onto horses and carried the them away, but the army left them. The bodies of the two other fatalities, Michael McCannon and Lorenzo Ayers, were left with the Indians and never retrieved Alexander D.B.Smead In the spring of 1868 he was nominated by the President for a commission in the Regular Army, and passed an examination before a board of military officers convened for that purpose. On August 1, 1868, he was commissioned second lieutenant in the Third United States Cavalry. He was an officer of that regiment for over eleven years. He was stationed in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nebraska, Wyoming, Dakota and Montana; was much on active duty in the field and occasionally engaged in Indian hostilities. He was promoted first lieutenant in 1871, and regimental adjutant in 1878. In 1879 He resigned from the army for the purpose of practicing law. Battle of the Rosebud- Prelude to Little Big Horn The Battle of the Rosebud took place on June 17, 1876, and was the largest single encounter between the United States cavalry and Indian forces in terms of numbers in the entire history of the American West Around 8 a.m. on June 17, 1876, Crook halted his force of about 1,300 men in the bowl of a small valley along the Rosebud Creek in order to allow the rear of the column to catch up. Crook’s soldiers unsaddled and let their horses graze while they relaxed in the grass and enjoyed the cool morning air. The American soldiers were out in the open, divided, and unprepared. Suddenly, several Indian scouts rode into the camp at a full gallop. “Sioux! Sioux!” they shouted. “Many Sioux!” Within minutes, a mass of Sioux warriors began to converge on the army. A force of at least 1,500 mounted Sioux warriors caught Crook’s soldiers by surprise. Crazy Horse had kept an additional 2,500 warriors in reserve to finish the attack. Fortunately for Crook, one segment of his army was not caught unprepared. His 262 Crow and Shoshone allies had taken up advanced positions about 500 yards from the main body of soldiers. With astonishing courage, the Indian warriors boldly countercharged the much larger invading force. They managed to blunt the initial attack long enough for Crook to regroup his men and send soldiers forward to support his Indian allies. The fighting continued until noon, when the Sioux-perhaps hoping to draw Crook’s army into an from the field. Fort Laramie For forty-one years, from 1849 to 1890, Fort Laramie was at the center of continuous friction between westering Anglo-Americans and American Indians. Early Indian battles were fought in the environs of the fort, located at the confluence of the North Platte and Laramie rivers in what is now Wyoming. Two of the major presaging agreements of the 1876 Great Sioux War, including the famous Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, were negotiated and signed there. The great Black Hills gold rush, cause célèbre of the 1876 war, engulfed the post in the nation's centennial year. As the largest post in Brig. Gen. George Crook's five-state military Department of the Platte, Fort Laramie not only ushered forth supplies and campaign troops in traditional fashion in 1876, but it also guarded nearby Sioux agencies» policed major roads, advanced communications, secured immigrant travel, and was at the heart of a southern operational front of equal importance to that in the Powder and Yellowstone River country far to the north. eBay Robert E. Lee PLASTER, NYU Hall of Fame for Great Americans, 1965. 300mm (approx. 12” dia.). Plaster. Donald De Lue, Sc. (1897-1988). Cast from the original clay sketch. Uncirculated. About the obverse design of the plaster/medal, the sculptor stated: “The obverse portrays General Robert E. Lee as Commander in Chief of the Confederate forces. Lee, one of the great Generals of all time, fought one of the greatest campaigns in military history. He fought against the armies of the Northern States which had an unlimited supply of men and munitions. Victory after victory was achieved, usually against great odds, by the sheer brilliance of his strategy. Finally overcome by superior force, he laid down his arms with the respect and admiration of his foes for a great soldier and a distinguished gentleman.” Around bust of Lee facing left holding sword: HALL OF FAME FOR GREAT AMERICANS, NEW YORK UNIVERSITY; bottom center with dates to the left and right: 1807 ROBERT E. LEE 1870. The plaster was acquired from an art dealer, who had purchased most of De Lue’s estate after his passing. The plaster is approximately 12” in diameter and 2” in overall depth thickness There is a very minor bump in the highpoint of the hair, above the ear at 12:00 position, which is hard to discern. Otherwise, no visible cracks or chips are found. This exceptional, truly superb, high-relief Robert E. Lee plaster was executed in preparation for De Lue’s highly desirable 1965 medal for the New York University Hall of Fame for Great Americans medal series. The 76mm medal shown with the plaster is for reference only and is not part of this sale. The plaster comes with a COPY of the original bronze medal descriptive pamphlet of issue. The Hall of Fame for Great Americans at New York University was established in 1900. Bronze portrait busts of the honorees were commissioned and placed in an open-air colonnade, and starting in 1962, medals struck by the Medallic Art Company were issued to honor the inductees. 42 various sculptors designed created bronze medals, many of whom were members of the National Sculpture Society. The series was discontinued around 1977 with 94 medals having been issued. Robert E. Lee was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1900. Thank you for looking! Williams College commemorated its part in the great war for civilization by a Victory celebration on October 17, 1919 at Williamstown, MA, when it awarded the “Williams Medal” to 1,726 living Williams men who were actually enrolled in the Army, Navy or Marine Corps of the United States, or in the military organizations of one of our allies, and to the next of kin of the “glorious forty-five” men who laid down their lives in the great conflict. Major General Leonard Wood, who was an adopted son of Williams College by virtue of the honorary degree given to him in 1902, made the presentation address. The celebration was the first commemoration of its kind at an American college and was covered in news publications outside of the Berkshires such as the Boston Transcript. Accompanying the medal was a card bearing the following inscription: “The President and Trustees of Williams College take great pleasure in awarding the Williams Medal to you as a token of their appreciation of the honor that you have brought to the College by your patriotic service in the war.” I have a large collection of bronze bas-reliefs, plaques, medallions, and medals that I will be listing this month by the following sculptors: Chester Beach, Victor David Brenner, Anthony de Francisci, Donald De Lue, John Flanagan, James Earle Fraser, Laura Gardin Fraser, Daniel Chester French, Henry Hering, Anna Vaughan Hyatt Huntington Charles Keck, Julio Kilenyi, Frederick MacMonnies, Hermon A. Edge serial numbered “153” (of 205). About Uncirculated, with a few minor marks/spots. Obverse: facing left in high relief, is represented the symbolic head of a youthful American soldier in uniform and helmet. Signed at bust truncation: DCF. Low’s (WHL) initials were included on the medal due to his suggestion to French that the nurse stand in front of the bed, not behind. The medal was initially conceived by Robert de Forest, President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees, as an award medal (to be struck in gold) to twelve prominent New York businessmen, who generously gave their time and resources for the War Council of the American Red Cross. The model for the obverse was French’s nephew Prentiss French. The interest in the medal was so great that the committee in charge had decided to issue a limited number of medals in bronze, to be sold to subscribers, with 205 bronze medals recorded and issued by the American Numismatic Society. Along with the 1917 French and British War Commissions medal, Barbara Baxter considers this medal as one of French’s two most outstanding pieces.
